Paro City Guide - Hotel, Food & Transportation - Bhutan Trip-E9- Camping...

¬My Travel plan of travelling to Paro on Next day morning got changd, when Lubzang told me that he has a meeting at 10:00 Am tomorrow and wont be able to travel early morning.

Thinking to meet with the group and spend sometime with Prabhjit, I decided to travel in the evening itself.

Lubzang father picked up us from the Handicraft market. They both also booked a cab for me in Nu/INR 250, which supposed to pick me up from nearby home only.

We walked to the road, after receiving the call from the driver. Lubzang father along with him, came to drop me. Lubzang didn’t allow me to carry my bag, he carried my bag and kept it on his shoulders until I boarded the cab.

It was around 6:00 PM, when I got in to the cab and reached Paro at 8:00 PM. It was raining throughout the way.

They said to come and meet me at the same place, where we met yesterday. It took them sometime to reach that place, as they want to see the Dozong of Paro city for some photographs of night view with decorative lights.

It was shocking to know when they said that there is no room available in Jia Resort, where they were staying and they also updated that this trip has to get terminated because of health issues with a Father and Daughter duo and another group member.

So, after bidding a farewell , I started searching a hotel. I tried different hotels at that time around 8:30 PM in the night, Most of them were asking between 2200 to 1800 Nu/INR. I started thinking about the options of camping nearby. Luckily after my few tries to get a hotel at a lowest range I came across a board written “Chef’s Hotel”.

I climbed stairs and reached at the reception. A lady was there.

“Nu/INR 1000” main ho jaiga – she said
“I asked her to reduce by saying – “ I am a budget Traveller and cannot spend this much. Also my friend will come soon and then we will stay a little longer”

“Nu/INR 900” is final” - she gave me a final deal now

Room No 305 a corner room with 2 single beds, 2 windows. This is what I got.

I found it okay and checked in thinking once Aakash will come, the rent will be shared and he will come and share the same rent with me.

Next morning, I went to the restaurant named as Chef’s Kitchen.

“What is there is Breakfast” – I asked
“Puri Bhaji, Egg, Bread and butter, what would you like to have?” – She asked

I am sure being an Indian, what would have been my choice

I paid Nu/INR 150 for 4 pieces of Puri and some Bhaji made with Potato.

It was shockingly costly for an Indian where we believe food is always in the range of 30 to 50 to 60 rupees. These cheap rehriwala and stall walas has spoiled us completely. Our range is up to sixty or max 100 only even on various online apps.

Anyways, this was the 1st and last time when I ordered my food in this restaurant.

In fact each ad every restaurant will offer you food for 150 to 200 and above.

I bought 1 cold drink 2 liters, 1 Bread and 1 Parle G 10 rupees wala packet, here it’s in 20 Nu/INR.

This I had for lunch, dinner and breakfast too.

Being Solo, its very costly everything here, when you are in a group, you tend to spend less because you share the food and the cost.

For example – when I went to Fun Food another restaurant here, we ordered for chicken and rice. We paid Nu/INR 200 for both. Butter milk was complementary.

So, Now no Haa Valley. I was sitting in sunlight and chilling. Lubzang was busy in building the stall for the event and I was chilling in the hotel.

Day 4 ended here like this.

World’s Biggest Statue of Buddha – Buddha Point - Thimphu–Bhutan Trip -E...

I skipped this plan, as suggested by Lubzang and discussed with them. So, we made a plan to go to “Bhddha Point” in Thimphu.
Lubzang called up his father asking, where is he? As he was around, we took his maruti van by dropping him at home and went to see “Bhddha Point” or “Buddha Statue”, which is on a hilltop and 54 meters high.
Buddha point is around 6 kilometers away from Thimphu city, took us 30 minutes to climb. View was amazing as always. We were enjoying the view of roadside house, green fields and stunning hills at the background under beautiful blue sky on this sunny day.

I was busy with shooting and Aakash was sitting on back seat, To Kill the silence I initiated a topic about “Aakash liking for Bhutanese girls”.

Which was very we;; taken forward by Lubzang.

“Aakash like Bhutanese girls a lot” – I sparked the discussion with these words.
“Shadi Karo lo Aakash” – Lubzang Said
“Shadi to kar lega, par Jhel Nahi Paaiga” - - added
Lubzang laughed loud on this.
“He can not marry to Bhutanese girls” – I added again giving clarity about his family background and obligations.
“he can get marry, that’s not a problem, but will not be able to live with Bhutanese girls” – Lubzang said again emphasizing on the fact of bearing with Bhutanese girls.

I asked – How can Aakash, get marry to a Bhutanese girl, being an outsider”.

“That’s not a problem”. He just have to find a Girl, who wants to marry him and rest is a cake walk” – he said

“So, the only thing required to get marry to a Bhutanese girl , is only a Girl” - I asked again
“yes” – He instantly replied.
“What about Family, Parents, Society” – I asked about the formalities from Society like marriage functions , registration etc.

“If boy and girl are ready, simply tell your family and her family” –
“Their acceptance is not important “ –
“Spend a night with her and you are a married man now” – he said

“So, there is no need of Marriage Functions, Ring Exchange etc” – I confirmed again

‘yes” – He again replied instantly.

I was surprised on this simple way of wedding. Isn’t it nice. When the bride and the groom is agreed, rest everything doesn’t matter. Also, the parents are also not burdened about a heavy costing function, dowry etc. Simply stay together.

To see and understand this discussion , watch Day 3, Episode 6 on my YouTube Channel Name – Camping Traveller India.

We reached on the “Buddha Point” now. As we came thru another road, we entered to the place from backside gate.

Buddha point is also known as “Buddha Dordenms” which has a 54 meters high golden color Sakyamuni Statue. The Statue of Lord Buddha is there is “Future Buddha”, because his hand is palmed down touching to the earth.

This is one of the largest Buddha Rupas in the world. There are many golden color status of Bodhisattava are made around the main status of Buddha.

The main gate is having 1000-foot steps, which one has to climb and reach at the main ground.

Timings of these places are 9:00 Am to 5:00 PM in summers and 9:00 Am to 4:00 PM in winters.

We spent a good 2 hours time. Around 1:00 PM, we started our return journey as we were feeling hungry now.

We thought of to a Authentic Bhutanese Restaurant, where all the Bhutanese people go for Local food items like Red Rice, Ema Datshi, Aeze and some more like that. We rushed to reach there before lunchtime of 1:00 PM because during the lunch break this restaurant is fully occupied with Government officers working in near by offices. They come here for lunch.

To see more details and about the food, we had in the restaurant, see my Video Day 3 – Episode 8 of Bhutan Series. Channel Name – Camping Traveller India.

Best Bhutanese Restaurant & Food in Thimphu - Bhutan Trip - E8- Camping ...

After parking our Van, we reached to a Restaurant in the market on a distance of 3 minutes walk from the parking. We tried rushing there because as per Lubzang, during the lunch break, government office employees come there for lunch and that’s why we may have to wait there.

And he was right! When we reached this restaurant on 2nd floor, Named Dorji Taborzi Restaurant, It was full.

We went on 3rd floor in the same building at Q-Ball, which is a Snooker Bar. There you go play pool and drink with snacks on music.

This is the place about what Lubzang was talking about during our night out to various discs, bars and restaurants in Thimphu. For more details watch Day 2 – Episode 6 – Night Life in Thimphu on my youTube channel – Camping Traveller India.

Here the charges are Nu/INR 100 per game. If you wish to play on hourly basis, that’s also possible. Charges are not confirmed. There I met another friend of Lubzang, With Whom I met here in Delhi some days back.. His name is Thinley, he is studying French and is an aspiring tour guide.

After killing 15 minutes watching people playing and after some chitchat with friends, we returned to the Restaurant and found a table for 3 of us.

I left the responsibility on Lubzang to order food for us as well and it came up as a good decision. He ordered so many new things like butter tea or Sooza, which came up a good start of lunch.

For 4 dishes, 1. Ema Datshi, Potato Datshi, Mushroom Datshi and Chicken Pa, with Butter Tea and Butter Milk and yes, lots of Chilly Chatni named Eaze… we paid Nu/INR 560 at the end with unlimited Red Rice.

Isn’t it great. At that time I found it very costly and was crying food is very costly in Bhutan. But, now when I look back and think… I am finding it very good and economical dear. Nu/INR 185 per person, for 3 of us… don’t you thinks its great.

I mean, I may be able to find 50 or 70 rupees Thai in India, but this food is far better then what we get in that Thali.

We came out of the restaurant happy and smiling. With lots of good memories and sweet smiling of those 2 girls, who served us. These both the girls are the owner of this restaurant. They are so preety and friendly.

When she said me thanks after the bill payment on the counter, that was showing how grateful Bhutanese peoples are.

DO visit this Restaurant for best food. I returned to this Restaurant 3 time with different peoples and is a loyal customer now.

Everything About Bhutan Visa Extension, Route Permit Process - Bhutan Tr...

Today I got up early at 7:00 Am. Its early because slept at 2:30 Am, last night because of our nightout and parties there in various discs and bars. I observed there is no water in the tap in toilet and outside. Had to manage with little water in a plastic drum kept inside the toilet. Because of hesitation, I didn’t go inside the house to ask from them and couldn’t ask from Lubzang too, as he was still sleeping. As per his routine, he normally gets up at 8:30 Am.

I was without bath and brushing my mouth and face. I dressed up after cleaning my face with little water was there in my water bottle. Went inside to big a adieu to the family.

Thinley came out of the house and responded as “hi” to my knock on the door.

“I am leaving, just came to say bye to everyone” – I informed her
“No! You have breakfast, I have made it for you. Its ready” – I responded back
“I will be late, its already around 8:00 Am, I should go. I need to go and get my Permit from Immigration office” – I further informed her about the reason for my early leaving home.

So, I had to stay and to have the breakfast. Benefit is , now Lubzang also got up and we left for the Visa at Thimphu Immigration office together.

Rules for Permit Extension:
1. Fill Permit extension form available at the counter
2. Attach the Photocopy of Visa / Permit taken from Jaigaon / Phuentsholing

Bhutan Nightlife, Discs, Bars, Drinks, Movie in Thimphu - Bhutan Trip - ...

Day 2 – Episode 5 – Bhutan Nightlife – Discs and Bars, Drinks, Movie – Camping Traveller India - Amice

Zumtrul is a bar, which is a karaoke bar actually. So there you sing any song of your choice on karaoke and enjoy drinks.

Nu/INR is 150 for Beer and Nu/INR 100 for 60 ml wine peg with Free snacks. It’s a good deal. I had a beer and Lubzang has a wine glass.

Soon, Aaksha called back and he also joined us there. He said he was a bar nearby and missed the calls due to the music. Some live band was performing. Now, we three were there and enjoying our drinks and we tried that karaoke on bollywood song – Mere Sapno ki Rani Kab Aaiygi Tu”.

It was fun. Lubzang and Aakash became good friend. We moved hom around 12:30 after leaving Aakash to the hotel.

One very catchy song grabbed my attention, out of 4, 2 to 3 was singing this song only.

Tile is Pubosha … Pubosha…. Pubosha…. . Really not aware of album or film name, but the beats are amazing. Try listening it on YouTube.
I am still surprised, only Karaoke version is available.
Next Morning, after breakfast, I went to the immigration office and applied for the route permit.

That lady said, it would take 2 hours, so come after 2 hours. So Lubzang and me went to the market and started doing sight seeing and this was my 1st visit to Thimphu.

Documents required for Route Permit are as below:
1. Fill Route Permit Form
2. Give Photocopy of Permit which you taken from Phuentsholing
3. A Written Declaration for Solo Traveller - same way as we given at the time of applying for Permit

Same documents need to be submitted for Permit extension as well. Simply replace Route permit form with Immigration Permit Form.

So, now I suppose to get my route permit by 12:00 Noon. We decided to go meet Deki and Nubru.

Their shops were just in front of immigration office. So we went there and met them.

Taxi: While Going we paid Taxi fare of 30 Nu/INR each and while coming back as it was a special taxi we paid Nu/INR 150 total.

So here if you see a Taxi, you can stop and get in. If there are more passengers inside, it’s a shared taxi and you will pay only Nu/INR 30 per person. And in case if you stop a taxi, and no passenger in inside, you may be asked to hire it specially.

Disc and Bar Timings: Disc and Bar timings are based on days. Saturday and Sundays, timing is till 1:00 AM, Friday its till 12 Midnight and rest of the days bars and discs are opened till 11:00 PM. Bhutan police keep the track and control on opening and closing timings.

Day & Night Shop: I found a shop in the market, near Legar Theater, its very closed to Clock Tower, which keep opened throughout night. If anyone is interested identify the name of the shop from the video and approach in odd timing.

Drinks are available on all the shops: Almost all the shops and restaurants are selling drinks of all kind. Simply go and pay and buy. Beer is costing only Nu/INR 60 rupees. Those who health conscious and doesn’t drink, can take 1 liter bottle of “Lassi” or “Chaach” or “Butter Milk” what ever you call it in the same price of Nu/INR 60.

Pool Game Rates: unlink here in India, what I discover with the discussion held with Lubzang, They pay Nu/INR 100 on per game basis. Not on per hour basis. This is not a authentic piece of information, yet I have, so sharing. I went to a pool bar but didn’t ask, as I am not a person who is very keen and good in playing pools.

Name of Bars in Thimphu:
1. Viva City : Viva city is a restaurant famouse for its crowed and DJ music. Its accommodate a good colume of visitors.
2. Mojo Park : its popular and has made a identity for live music bands performances. Many VIP and high society visitors prefer to visit this disc.
3. Zumtrul – Karekoke Bar : if you are found of music and love to sing as well, its an place for you . Sound quality and big screens are amazing. A good place to gathering and parties.
4. The Ace Bar:

One Night Stay with a Bhutanese Family in Thimphu–Bhutan Trip -E4- Campi...

Day 2 – Episode 4

Bhutan Trip – Dinner and Stay with Bhutanese Family – Camping Traveller India – Amice

After making a hunt to some more hotels, we gave up and thought to go out of the city and explore with some home stay.

Next day, hike to the tiger’s nest was planned. We made a plan to start at 10 Am. And day after tomorrow, we were leaving for Haa Valley.

To go Haa Valley, you need to have a Route Permit, because that’s a different district like Punakha. The Permit, you take from Phuentsholing is valid to Thimphu and Paro district only.

If you are planning to go to other districts like Punakha and Haa, two different route permits need to be taken, one at a time from Thimphu.

So, it was mandatory for me to take the permit if I really wanted to go to Haa Valley.

Keeping this in view, I decided to go to Thimphu to night and apply for the Permit early as soon as they open the office. Take it and come back by 10:30 or 11:00 AM.

Keeping in mind, I left the group at Paro and joined Lubzang. We travelled to Thimphu in his car and stayed with his family in the night.

After the dinner, Lubzang took me to have the experience of Thimphu nightlife. We went to a Karaoke Bar and ordered for a beer for a drink and me for him.
It was a good place, not very crowded but alive. Lots of songs are being played there on Karaoke.

This was a fun filled Family Dinner, where not only I enjoyed the Bhutanese cuisine but also enjoyed the Chit chat, brother sisters fight and mothers silent participation in to these all fights.

They made Red Rice (Bhutanese Specialty) , Ema Datshi, Butter Milk and a dish made with Potato and onion leaves or may be garlic leaves.

I liked this spicy traditional chatni a lot. Name of this dish is somewhere in the video, which was told me to by Thinley during the dinner only. See the video and find out on my youTube channel – CampingtravellerIndia.

They use wooden bowls to eat food. This bowl is also the part of their culture. They eat everyday in those bowls but they never wash it with water. Only dry cleaning with a dry clothe is done after food.

After a homely dinner with Lubzang family, we both went for a night out. We thought to pick up Aakash from the hotel. I know that he is staying in Hotel Himalyan Kessa.

India to Bhutan in just INR 1050 - Bhutan Trip - E:1-Camping Traveller I...

Everything you need to know on "How to Travel to Bhutan" from New Delhi.

Travelling to Bhutan by Land:
We can take trains to New Jalpaiguri railway station in west Bengal either from Chandigarh or Delhi Anand Vihar Terminal Train from Chandigarh is twice a week Sunday and Wednesday. From Delhi we have many trains on daily basis. Ticket price is almost same in sleeper class within the range of INR 600 - 800 one side journey. As I was travelling on Tuesday, so I had to catch the bus from Delhi. So I travelled to Delhi by BUS paid INR 245/- to ISBT and Metro from ISBT to Anand Vihar Terminal paid INR 24/-. Train Journey Time may vary between 24-25 Hours to 33-35 hours depending upon the train we select. Trains are 3 to 5 hours late normally on this route.
“Where from can I get the bus to Jaigaon” – I asked
Bus started at 1:40 PM, 10 minutes late to the scheduled time. I reached Hasimara in 110 Rupees and 5 Hours 30 Minutes .
At Hasimara, we got a local Auto and to Jaigaon, which were readily available. In 40 minutes and 30 Rupees I reached at Jaigaon. Here, I got my first 20 rupees currency note of Bhutan.
Currency:
No Need to be worried about the currency conversion. Except INR 2000 rupees notes, all the currency notes are happily accepted in Bhutan. Infact there is no problem at all in terms of currency.
Stay:
At Jaigaon, only 2 types of Hotel rooms I could found near the gate. INR 350 for double occupancy and with attached bathroom and INR 250 for Single Bed room and with or without attached bathroom ( that’s means we have to use a common bathroom). Rate is almost ranging between 250 to 300. If you can cross the boarder and come to Bhutan side, which is allowed to come and stay. Hotel Rooms quality is much better, simply add 100 rupees i.e. INR 350 to 450. Food is costly at Jaigaon and in Phuentsholing also.
Beers are very economical here at Phuentsholing. 90 or 100 rupees. Druk is a Bhutanese Beer Brand.
